Insults insulate. The social animals that we are, we are enraged by being cast aside... because back in our evolutionary past, loss of social status was a bone fide existential crisis. Insults insulate. We have to learn to insulate these neural circuits of rage - to override this emotional atavism of rage with software of new narrative: "It doesn't matter if I don't matter to the ones that matter to me." Indeed, on an occasional basis, it's okay if those you love don't pay attention to you as they are caught up in themselves. If, however, it's a consistent relational pattern, then it's a deal-breaker: you move to a new cave, caveman. Consciousness is funny: the living matter wants to matter.
