The "primordial neural map of the body" in what we call a mammalian brain - the so-called "proto-self" - does not answer the question of "What is self?" Such a "proto-self" is a neural collecive, a neural "we" not a neural "I." Such a "proto-self" only pushes the question of "What is self?" back from metazoan coherence-building to intra-cellular level of analysis. The answer to the question of "What is self?" - imo - always points past the dualistic notion of self towards the Living Nondual of All That Is.
